Fergus O’Byrne’s voice has been described as having “the size and strength of an oak barrell.”
As a member of the renowned folk group Ryan’s Fancy, he now tours nationally and internationally with Jim Payne and a Crowd of Bold Sharemen, as well as performing locally with his son Fergus Brown-O’Byrne. Fergus and his fellow member of Ryan’s Fancy, the late Dermot O’Reilly, were the first two people to ever take the stage at O’Reilly’s.
In February 2011, Fergus produced the highly acclaimed double CD Ryan’s Fancy – What A Time, A 40-Year Celebration. Most recently Fergus was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Folk Arts Society of Newfoundland & Labrador and has been recognized for his continuing efforts to promote traditional music through his initiative, Young Folk at the Hall.
Brenda’s favourite song? “It’s really tough to pick my Fergus favourite, but the one that Craig loves the best is Spancil Hill – it’s about Irish immigrants missing home. Every time I hear Fergus sing it, it reminds me of both him and Craig.”
Fergus O’Byrne performs regularly at O’Reilly’s – check our entertainment schedule for listings!
